ART ………………………………………………… Catherine Huang

Catherine just finished AP Studio Art with me this year and  produced a stunning Portfolio. I have known Catherine for several years and truly admire her work ethic and attention to detail. Catherine spearheaded the Gallery Club and a number of other clubs on campus this year. She shows great leadership and was one of the head curators of the Green Dragon Art  Show this year. Catherine spent endless hours perfecting her art and developing her portfolio . I am very happy to have known her and worked with her .

COMPUTERS ………………………………………………… Tabitha Hibbs

This is the first year I had Tabitha in class. Tabitha is taking both of my AP Courses.  She has been a fantastic student in AP Computer Science A and Principles.  She is an extremely talented programmer.  She has an inquisitive mind and is always looking for the best method to solve a coding problem.  She demonstrated valuable leadership skills in class. She is always looking for new ways to challenge her coding abilities.

OUTSTANDING SENIOR IN THEATRE …………… Dante Arminio

Dante is so deserving of this award it really goes without saying. He is an actor above all others. Commitment, dedication, kindness and talent are all words I would use to describe him. Not only has he served as an ASB officer but he was also a Thespian officer, technical theatre student and varsity athlete. And he did it all with style and grace. I personally want to thank Dante for all he has done for our department and each of our productions. Dante is off to the east coast in Fall 2022 to continue being a leader as he plans to go into politics. I’m sure his acting skills will be put to the test!  We wish him the very best and hope he remembers us when he becomes the future president of the United States.

ENGLISH ………………………………………………… Alba Mendis

Alba Mendis was selected by multiple English teachers at a recent English department meeting as a clear and intent writer, well-read and wonderful.

INDUSTRIAL ARTS CCTE

CERAMICS ………………………………………………… Claire Santistevan

Claire is an outstanding student, and after such a short time in the studio shows great dedication and talent. Her enthusiasm and spirit are contagious! Her peers are drawn to her while she is working. Claire is willing to take risks with new methods and techniques, always with a positive attitude. I know Ceramics and the Arts will always be a part of Claire’s life and be a positive creative outlet.

GRAPHICS ………………………………………………… Maya Haskal

Maya Haskal was my computer graphics student for only the Spring semester, but she had quickly shown an ability to work through the challenges of graphic design.  I have had the pleasure of working with Maya during distance learning in the Green Construction Design class, and I was amazed at how thorough she was with her video and photographic documentation of her work with the hand tools and of her design process.  I always looked forward to grading her work because she was a sincere and able student. I have seen that very same work ethic this year in graphic design.  I have to say, in-person instruction is so much better than distance learning.  I have been able to talk with Maya about her plans to study law abroad, and I can see how truly excited she is about those plans.  Maya, it has been a pleasure having you in my graphics class this semester. I wish you the very best!  Congratulations!

WOODSHOP ………………………………………………… Cameron Cromwell

Cameron Cromwell has been a Fine-Woodworking student of mine the entire year.  After finishing a distance-learning class in Green Construction Design the prior year, she jumped right in and fearlessly, but with regard, began learning and using the tools in the shop. The tool that Fine Woodworking students get to use that is different than for all other students is the Lathe.  This can be an intimidating tool for most students, but Cameron stepped up and showed a real ability to turn everything from a shifter knob for her truck to turning a couple of bowls for her mother.  Cameron is leaving La Jolla High to pursue her education outside of California, but she is taking the memories of the smell of fresh-cut cedar, the sounds of whirring tools, and the feel of a well-made handle.  These forgotten memories will overwhelm her when, after many years have passed, she returns to a woodshop somewhere, on some campus, on parent night, and reminisces.  Good luck Cameron!  Remember, do things for you, not for anyone else.  Have a great life!

MATHEMATICS

Andrew Park

Andrew was always excited to learn new theorems and their applications in Math 150/250 everyday!

Carlos Nemeh

Carlos consistently asked excellent questions that demonstrated his deep thinking and understanding of the topics in Math 150/250!

MUSIC ………………………………………………… Kaia Layson

Kaia has excelled in her field of percussion throughout the school year. Being introduced to instruments she has never played before, Kaia tackled every one of these challenges and became a mature performer on each of these instruments. Not only were her musicianship skills on display, Kaia also demonstrated that she is a strong leader. Serving as Drum Major for the band and Drum Captain for the Drumline, Kaia was able to demonstrate musical excellence to the new students and lead during parade performances. Kaia has a very bright future ahead of her. I wish her nothing but the best when she arrives at Tulane University.

SCIENCE ……………………………………………… Chris Ceballos

Chis excelled all four years in science. He is one of the top students in the biomedical pathway. For his biomedical internship he studied the effects of altitude and genetics at the Simonson Lab at UCSD. Chris is very respectful, diligent, and performed well in group activities.
